This unit focuses on beverages. There are three categories of drinks that can be consumed regularly, occasionally, and rarely. First, use the catalog to have students think about and classify the foods and drinks into these categories. Then, extend the topic of sugar content in foods and beverages by teaching students how to read nutrition labels and calculate how many grams of sugar are in a given product. Students will also physically weigh out the equivalent amount of sugar and place it next to the product to make a visual comparison. In addition to providing a meaningful context for learning English, the goal is to make numbers more tangible and advocate for reducing sugar intake.
