Kids Helping Kids

Soon after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast states, destroying the homes and possessions of almost one million Americans and forcing many students to evacuate from their familiar surroundings, the Fulbright English teachers, local English teachers, and school administrators developed a program to reach out to young students affected by the storm. In this program called Kids Helping Kids, a school in I-Lan County will partner with a school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to empathize with and encourage the students who have been evacuated from their homes in New Orleans, which experienced the most severe damage and flooding. Like the Gulf Coast, Taiwan is also frequently affected by typhoons, and the children here can identify with the difficulties facing the children devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

The purpose of this program is two-fold. The first purpose of this program is to support students who have lost their homes, clothing, and toys by writing letters and possibly including a small gift of encouragement, demonstrating the kindness of Taiwanese students. The second purpose of this program is to promote mutual understanding and greater intercultural knowledge between the children of Taiwan and of the United States by establishing a potentially long-lasting friendship between the schools that are partnered together. Through this friendship, the schools may send letters, emails, video, pictures, etc. to each other to develop a greater understanding of one another’s cultures.

This program will initially be implemented by the twelve schools in I-Lan County who are working in conjunction with the United States Fulbright Program, which aims to increase mutual understanding between the United States and other countries. After being assigned to a school in Baton Rouge, the Fulbright or lead teacher will work with his or her school to coordinate this project, deciding how the project will be presented, the exact timetable, and what it will include (letters, pictures, gifts, etc.). The lead teacher will then write a letter of introduction explaining the project to his or her assigned school and extending an invitation to become a sister school.

The overall goal of the project is meant to not only help kids help other kids through a picture or gift of encouragement in the immediate future, but also to help kids learn about, share and appreciate their differences and similarities over an extended period of time.

讓孩子們學習成為世界公民的第一課

宜蘭縣國小為卡翠娜颶風災童進行愛心募捐

宜蘭縣內美籍英語教師發起”Kids help Kids”兒童互助計畫，擬邀請12所英語種子學校學童與家長響應捐獻物資給美國卡翠娜颶風受災學童，並由宜蘭的孩子撰寫打氣信函，讓遠在美國的災童也能感受到來自地球另一端兒童的愛心與關懷，本計畫將由宜蘭縣政府協助推動。

宜蘭縣政府為了讓英語教育向下紮根，過去三年來一共從美國聘請了35位美籍英語教師參與協同教學計畫，今年度12位來自美國各州的協同英語教師，看到遠在地球另一端的同胞們正遭受著莫大的苦楚，有些外師甚至與自己的親友失聯好幾天，自八月份來台至今也經歷過4次颱風的他們，認為台灣的孩童應該比任何國家的孩童都更能體會大自然反撲的威力及天災的可怕，因此他們決定為美國紐奧良地區一無所有的災童進行募捐，募捐對象不是知名的企業或社團，而是宜蘭縣內的國小學童。

大福國小的外師Julianna(舒久麗)表示，卡翠娜颶風肆虐美國紐奧良地區，造成數百萬災民無家可歸，學童必須跟著父母遷移到附近的城市寄讀在別的學校，但是他們沒有紙筆、沒有錢買午餐與課本，生活頓失依靠，如果可以得到來自地球另一端的祝福與打氣紙條，甚至是物資的幫助像是文具、水壺、T恤…等，除了紐奧良的孩童得到雪中送炭的溫暖，對台灣的學童來說，除了送出一份關懷，更是學習成為世界公民的第一課，美語已不是學科，而是溝通的工具，12位外師將會指導小朋友寫下鼓勵與打氣的信函，隨著他們憑個人意願捐助物資，一起運送到美國路易斯安那州。

舒久麗表示，她已經與美國十二個學校的行政單位取得聯繫，希望透過這次的捐獻活動，將來台美兩所學校彼此可以締結為姊妹校，增進彼此的互動與進一步瞭解；對此，宜蘭縣教育局方面表樂觀其成，教育局長文超順表示：「我們很高興能夠有這些外師從中協助，也讓我們有機會雪中送炭，除了孩童的愛心得以發揮之外，也讓他們對於英語有更進一步的運用機會，這樣不但可以有機會認識其他國家的小朋友，也間接促進宜蘭縣與美國學校的校際交流。」

目前教育局方面將會參考外師的建議，擬訂具體的行動方案，進行12所英語種子學校的”校對校、人對人”的捐助計畫，比起一般的筆友交流活動，這樣捐助計畫更有教育意義。宜蘭地區或外縣市其他學校若有意願加入此項活動，可以與「宜蘭縣中外師協同教學計畫」專案代表詹鈞涵老師聯繫。
