Earth is shaking less
Because of the coronavirus,
in a lot of countries
around the world
many, many people are
staying at home.
People are only going out
when they really need to,
like to buy food.
This means that outside it is much less busy.
因為疫情 世界上很多人都待在家裡
所以外面沒什麼人.
There are fewer people, fewer cars, and
just a lot fewer things going on.
Scientists have actually
found out that because
there isn’t so much happening,
the world is shaking much less.
地球震動的頻率也變少了.
Huh? How can scientists tell how much the earth is shaking?
Well, they use a special
tool called a seismometer,
他們用了地震儀.
This tool can figure out how much the earth is
shaking underground,
and it sends this information to scientists.
這個工具可以測量地球有多少震動.
This tool is very useful to the scientists
because it helps them find
information about volcanic eruptions and …earthquakes!
Phew! Even when there are no earthquakes happening or
volcanos erupting, cities still shake a lot.
沒地震或火山爆發, 市區還是會震動
Think about all the
cars, trucks, trains, road work, and people.
There’s just so much going on all the time.
But because many people
are now staying at home,
a lot of that shaking is … gone.
但現在很多震動都不見.
That means the scientists’ special tool can now focus on other,
much smaller movements.
They can study stuff like waves, water moving
underground,
and even earthquakes on the other side of the world!
地震儀也可以測出地球另一邊的地震!
That’s amazing.
I wonder if we all stayed quiet and
peaceful more often,
what else would be able to study?
